“Coach” scams McDonald’s out of food and money www.privateofficer.com

Warren PA. March 23 2008
Police in three western Pennsylvania towns are looking for a man who pretends to be a basketball coach and scams McDonald’s restaurants out of food and money using bad checks.
Police say that they have received numerous complaints from stores managers that the man drives up in a school-type bus and enters the restaurants ordering about $50 of food for his “team.”
The man then pays with a $150 check that appears to be from a school district and takes his food and his change, in cash.
The stores learned they were scammed when the checks bounced and school systems didn’t know “the coach”.
Police say it happened March 14 at McDonald’s in Warren and Grove City and the next day in Titusville.
Authorities investigating the scheme say that they have worked up some good leads and think they know whose playing the part of the coach.
Police say as of Friday they have a suspect but haven’t arrested anyone.

University students arrested for selling stolen items on Craigslist www.privateofficer.com

Santa Clara Ca. March 22 2008
Two Santa Clara University athletes have been arrested for allegedly stealing iPods, laptops and credit cards from fellow students and then trying to sell them on Craigslist, according to police.
Thomas Hendrickson, 20, and William Gorin, 21, both members of the university’s water polo team, were arrested Monday in connection with the thefts after a Santa Clara police officer posed as a buyer and set up an exchange, police said Friday. The two were arrested on suspicion of burglary and possession of stolen property.
In an e-mail, SCU Athletic Director Dan Coonan said both students were suspended from the team pending “resolution of this matter.”
Saturday night, while attending a house party on Panelli Place, Hendrickson and Gorin made off with various electronic devices from an unlocked bedroom, according to police.
A few hours later, Gorin, from Mercer Island, Wash., and Hendrickson, from Los Altos, targeted an apartment on Bellomy Street with its lights off. The door was locked, but the two found a key under a doormat and got inside. With the residents asleep, they searched the immediate area and made off with several items, police said.
Monday, one of the victims, also a SCU student, saw several of his stolen items for sale on Craigslist and notified police. A police sergeant posed as a buyer and agreed to meet the seller at a pre-arranged location. Around 5:30 p.m. Monday, the detectives arrested Hendrickson, who had showed up to sell the stolen property. He was arrested on suspicion of possessing stolen property.
Gorin was later arrested at his residence in Santa Clara.
All of the stolen property was returned to its owners.

Four college students charged with rape www.privateofficer.com

Four college students charged with rape www.privateofficer.com

Chester County PA. March 22 2008
Four Lincoln University students have been charged with rape roughly 16 months after they allegedly attacked a woman in an all-male dormitory.
Steven “Cali” Jefferson, 20, of Stockton, Calif.; Terrell McDonald, 19, of Coatesville; Antonio Forbes, 21, of Mount Vernon, N.Y.; and Eric Goodwin, 20, of Yeadon, were all charged with rape for a Nov. 19, 2006, incident on Lincoln University’s campus.
Chester County Detectives and Lincoln University police filed the charges in the Oxford district court on Feb. 29. The criminal complaints accuse the four men of raping a female student while she was passed out, drunk, on the second floor of McRary Hall.
The men are suspended from the university, officials said.
The accuser told police that about 1:45 a.m. she, Goodwin and Jefferson were drinking in Jefferson’s dorm room. Then the victim said Goodwin walked her to a nearby empty dorm room because she wanted to go to sleep, records state.
The victim reportedly told police she never gave any of the accused men permission to have sex with her. And while in the empty dorm room she recalled people entering and exiting the room, including Goodwin, Jefferson and another man, records state.
According to court records, Forbes — a resident of McRary Hall — told police that about 3 a.m. he heard commotion in a nearby dorm room, and when he entered the room he saw roughly 10 male stu
dents standing around a bed.
Forbes reportedly told police he saw Jefferson and McDonald involved in sexual activity with the victim, whom he described as motionless, “passed out” and “unconscious.”
The victim suffered injuries including bruising on her arms and lower back, records state. She was treated at Brandywine Hospital after she reported the incident to campus police on the afternoon of Nov. 19.
Goodwin reportedly told police that after drinking together he took the accuser to the empty dorm room where the two engaged in sexual activity. Goodwin allegedly told police that when he left the accuser in the room she was intoxicated and incoherent.
All four men were charged with rape. Jefferson turned himself in Monday, Goodwin turned himself in March 14 and Forbes turned himself in March 10, investigators said. McDonald was arrested at the Chester County Courthouse when he was at the probation office. Investigators said McDonald was unaware of his arrest warrant.
During the investigation, numerous male students submitted DNA samples after signing voluntary consent forms, records state. Jefferson, Goodwin, Forbes and McDonald were among the submitters, police said.
Police said the DNA of all four accused men matched DNA collected either in the dorm room or on the victim’s body.
Campus Police Director Larry Woods said Thursday the arrest of the four men was delayed due to the processing of the DNA samples. Woods said the DNA was sent to a state police lab immediately after the incident, but the results were not returned until Oct. 11, 2007.
“That’s when we started to take the case further,” Woods said. “We did not drop this case. The case remained open.”
After receiving the DNA results, police conducted interviews but were told contradictory stories. Woods said details did not match up and most of those interviewed claimed they were not in the room.
All four men posted bail and their preliminary hearing is slated for April 30 before Magisterial District Judge Harry W. Farmer. In March 2007, McDonald pleaded guilty to charges of fleeing from police and recklessly endangering another person. The charges stemmed from a May 29, 2006, shooting in West Chester in which a man was shot in the leg. Police said McDonald was the driver of a vehicle that fled the scene, but they did not believe he was the shooter.

School decides to crackdown on “hoodies” www.privateofficer.com

School decides to “crackdown” on hoodies www.privateofficer.com

KALAMAZOO MI March 22 2008– A crackdown on ‘hoodies’ has ruffled some Kalamazoo middle school students and parents who question what the big deal is about wearing baggy sweatshirts.
While stopping short of formalizing it in a dress code, first-year Principal Craig McCane has asked the student body of 600 at Maple Street Magnet School for the Arts not to wear loose-fitting hoodies and other baggy clothing.
“We’re trying to improve classroom performance … and improve how our kids look,” McCane said. And, “It’s safety,” he continued.
“I don’t want contrabands getting carried into the building … and classrooms.”
Schools in some places around the country have recently started prohibiting hooded sweatshirts for various reasons. Boston public schools, for example, banned them because officials said the hoods make it easy for students to obscure their identities on security cameras while entering or leaving school, the Boston Globe reported.
Michael Reed, father of a seventh-grade girl who attends Maple Street, said his daughter was in band class recently when security guards came in and asked anyone who was wearing a hooded garment to go to the restroom and remove it.
“I don’t want my daughter to be told to leave band class … when she didn’t know she was doing something wrong,” Reed said. He said he knows of about eight to 10 parents who have voiced concerns, at Parent-Teacher Organization meetings or by e-mail to McCane, about the policy.
“I’m not going to go out and buy a new wardrobe,” said Michele Richards, mother of a Maple Street student. “It’s what the kids are wearing these days,” she said of hoodies.A seventh-grader interviewed for this story also questioned the need for the dress restrictions.
“They say it’s because they can bring weapons in and stuff,” the student said. “But, I don’t know how they can carry stuff in the small pockets.”
Others Maple Street students, however, say they consider the dress expectations to be acceptable.
“I think they (students) shouldn’t be allowed to wear hoodies,” another seventh-grade student said. “There have been kids known to bring in drugs and stuff … and if they have hoodies, that’s where they hide stuff.”
McCane said recently that there had not been security breaches at the school involving hooded sweatshirts, but that the potential exists for students to hide banned items in baggy clothing.
The principal said he doesn’t want students wearing triple-XL sweatshirts or other baggy clothing that goes down to their knees. If a hoodie is knit, form-fitting or goes with an outfit, that’s fine, he said.
McCane said the school attempted to provide more clarity in a newsletter to parents several weeks ago that said: “All outerwear, book bags and electronic devices must be secured in assigned lockers. Specifically, outerwear includes hoodies, coats, jackets and hats,” it said.
McCane said he expects that this spring the school will further clarify dress policies so parents will know what to buy their kids for the 2008/09 school year. The principal added that he’s pleased, overall, with the appearance of the school’s 600 students.
In the meantime, Reed said parents have talked about creating an online forum to discuss student dress requirements and other middle school issues. Reed said that while he thinks the school is well-run, some 40 parents and teachers involved in the discussion hope on online forum can help get parents and staff better connected about what is happening in the school.
Clothing requirements at Maple Street don’t apply to other buildings in the Kalamazoo Public Schools, which gives principals leeway in setting expectations for student dress, officials say.
At least for now, Maple Street appears to be exception rather than the rule among schools around southwestern Michigan with its policies on hoodies.
Mendon Junior/Senior High School doesn’t allow students to wear hoods, but they can wear hooded sweatshirts, Principal Jay Peterson said. “We’ve not had any situation where we felt it was a security issue,” said Peterson.
Officials at Kalamazoo’s Milwood Middle School as well as at Portage Central Middle School, and Paw Paw Middle School say they have not moved to regulate hoodies.
Paw Paw Middle School Principal Donald Barnhouse said he understands the arguments for banning them, however, and that school safety officers have recommended changing the dress code to ban all baggy clothing.
“I’m not ready to go there,” Barnhouse said. “It seems the more restrictions you have, the more problems you have … but you have to have guidelines.

Violent shoplifting causes school lock-downs www.privateofficer.com

Violent shoplifting causes school lock-downs www.privateofficer.com

Bradenton Fla. March 22 2008
A robbery of a Brandon department store on Friday afternoon led to the modified lockdowns of three schools six blocks away, authorities said.
Limona Elementary, McLane Middle and Brandon High schools were locked down from 1:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Hillsborough County schools spokeswoman Linda Cobbe said.
No one was injured, and no one at any of the schools was threatened.
Modified lockdown means outdoor activities are suspended and students who have to go outside to change classes must be in groups or pairs, she said.
The security measure took place when a man walked into the Wal-Mart at 1208 E. Brandon Blvd. around 1:30 p.m., smashed an electronics cases and took eight iPODs collectively valued at $3,898. He carried them out of the store in an empty shoebox, deputies said.
The robber was described as being white and in his 30s. He wore a light-colored T-shirt and blue jeans and drove off in a newer model white, two-door car, possibly a Chevrolet Cobalt, with a spoiler on the back.
Police did not say if any store employee tried to stop the shoplifter or if he made threats to anyone during the robbery.
Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to call deputies at (813) 247-8200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-8477.
